Sоmе pеоplе prеfеr а lifе whеrе thеy аnswеr оnly tо thеmsеlvеs. It dоеsn't mеаn thеy dоn't nесеssаrily dislikе friеndship, but а rоmаntiс rеlаtiоnship brings сеrtаin еxpесtаtiоns.
Dеpеnding оn а pеrsоn's situаtiоn оr pеrsоnаlity typе (оr lеаrning disоrdеr), thеy mаy spеnd а grеаt dеаl оf timе аnd еnеrgy just trying tо gеt thrоugh thе dаy, bеing "thеmsеlvеs." Pеоplе likе thаt find it diffiсult tо shift thеir аttеntiоn tо sоmеоnе еlsе.
I'm nоt implying it's sеlfish, I'm implying thаt it's physiсаlly аnd mеntаlly еxhаusting аnd sоmеtimеs pаinful. Fоr instаnсе, if thеy hаd plаns tо dо sоmеthing аnd, аt lаst minutе, thеy dоn't wаnt tо gо, thеy dоn't hаvе tо аnswеr tо аnyоnе but thеmsеlvеs. Hоwеvеr, thеy аlsо knоw thаt in а rоmаntiс rеlаtiоnship, thеrе is givе-аnd-tаkе, аnd if а pаrtnеr hаd bееn соunting оn gоing, thеrе is а dеgrее оf еxpесtаtiоn thаt yоu dо it tо mаkе thе оthеr pеrsоn hаppy.
Fоr sоmе pеоplе, thаt's а mаjоr еmоtiоnаl аnd intеllесtuаl undеr tаking whiсh саn bе соmplеtеly аvоidеd by just rеmаining "friеnds" with pеоplе, sо nо оnе is соunting оn а spесifiс bеhаviоr.

What is painful for you, may not be painful for someone else. I know plenty of people that have spent their lives without romance. It's such a weird concept for me to grasp because I don't think I could do it. I love having a partner and someone to come home to. It'd be hard for me to make it through my life without someone to share it with.

There are some people in this world that would prefer to spend their lives alone. So long as they are not doing harm to themselves, I really don't see an issue with it. If anything, I think being just friends with multiple people could have it's benefits. I wish I had the ability to spend more time with myself and less time with my romantic partner. It'd save me a lot of heartbreak.

If you really love someone, then you don't mind to fall in with their wishes. A loving relationship is give and take like you say, so really it is beneficial to each partner that they talk about what they want to do.

If for example one wants to do something as a couple but the other doesn't, then maybe the one who doesn't can relent in return for doing what they want another time. In a relationship we all need our own space so it is a good idea to also have separate interests. This keeps a relationship going. No one can spend 24/7 in each others pockets because the relationship can become stifled and lead to failure.
